Lithium battery incidents on aircraft are no longer a fringe concern. As passenger numbers recover and personal electronic device usage climbs, the frequency of thermal runaway events involving powerbanks and smartphones in aircraft cabins has caught the attention of regulators, airlines and safety organisations worldwide.

Malaysia Aviation Skills Standard Association (MASSA) is now taking a step toward addressing this through a new collaboration with South Korea-based technology firm Braindrop, one focused specifically on evaluating a flame-containment solution built for in-cabin battery emergencies.

The Risk Is Real

When a lithium-ion battery enters thermal runaway, the results can be severe. Temperatures can exceed 1,000°C, with the battery sustaining its own internal chemical reaction regardless of external intervention. Conventional fire extinguishers struggle to halt the process , they can suppress visible flames, but the reaction continues burning from within.

For cabin crew, that creates a serious problem. Time is limited. Evacuation may not be an option. And the fire is in close proximity to passengers, luggage and cabin materials.

What the TNF Air-Pouch Brings to the Table

Developed by Braindrop, the TNF Air-Pouch takes a containment-first approach rather than attempting to extinguish the fire outright. The pouch uses the company’s patented TNF flame-retardant technology, a water-based, non-toxic coating engineered to withstand the extreme temperatures generated during thermal runaway.

The design allows gases to vent safely while preventing flames from spreading to surrounding cabin materials, giving crew members a critical window to assess and manage the incident. It is available in both disposable paper and reusable cotton fabric versions, keeping the solution practical for operational deployment.

Where This Collaboration Stands

Under the partnership, MASSA and Braindrop will conduct technical evaluations and engage aviation stakeholders across Malaysia including airlines, airports and regulatory bodies through product testing and safety demonstrations.

TNF Air Pouch Bag

It is worth noting that this initiative remains at the evaluation and industry engagement stage. No regulatory approval, certification or endorsement has been granted. Any future implementation would require the appropriate assessment processes under Malaysian and international aviation frameworks, including guidance from ICAO and IATA.

A Broader Conversation

Malaysia is not alone in revisiting its approach to lithium battery safety. Across the region, aviation authorities have been tightening passenger directives and reviewing in-cabin procedures in response to a growing number of incidents.

Both organisations have indicated that should the evaluation progress, engagement could extend across the ASEAN aviation sector, a region that continues to see strong traffic growth and, with it, a rising volume of passenger-carried electronic devices.

The MASSA-Braindrop collaboration may still be in its early stages, but it reflects a wider industry recognition that thermal runaway is a problem that demands a dedicated, purpose-built response and not just a procedural patch.

The post Malaysia’s MASSA Explores In-Cabin Fire Containment Technology with South Korea’s Braindrop first appeared on NMH.

As a seasoned Boeing 737 Captain, Captain Khairulirwan’s story is one deeply rooted in family inspiration. Growing up with a father who was also a retired captain, aviation was more than just a career path, it was a legacy. Watching his father’s dedication to the profession ignited a passion in him from an early age, shaping the path he proudly follows today.

“My father was my greatest inspiration,” Captain Khairulirwan shared. “Seeing his commitment and hearing his experiences motivated me to pursue this career and continue striving for excellence.”

Recalling his first experience in the cockpit of a Boeing 737, Captain Khairulirwan described it as both exhilarating and intimidating.

“It was exciting, but at the same time, scary,” he said. “The responsibility was immense, and I knew I had a lot to learn.”

On World Pilots’ Day, we interviewed Captain Khairulirwan from the cockpit of a Batik Air plane

That Defining Milestone

Despite the initial nerves, that moment became a defining milestone. Through years of rigorous training, continuous learning, and unwavering perseverance, Captain Khairulirwan honed his skills and grew into the accomplished pilot he is today.

Like many aspiring aviators, his training journey was not without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles he faced was entering the field without prior aviation experience or foundational knowledge.

“The challenge was adapting to something completely new,” he explained. “You need to learn quickly, stay focused, and never stop improving.”

When it comes to ensuring safety and maintaining composure during unexpected situations in flight, Captain Khairulirwan emphasizes the importance of preparation and training.

“Pilots are trained to manage situations professionally,” he said. “Whenever something unusual happens, there are procedures to follow. Training prepares us to stay calm, think clearly, and prioritize safety at all times.”

For Captain Khairulirwan, discipline, focus, passion, and strong financial support are essential qualities for anyone aspiring to become a pilot.

Demanding But Rewarding

“Passion will drive you, discipline will shape you, and focus will keep you on course.

“Aviation is demanding, but for those who truly love it, the journey is incredibly rewarding.”

Among his favorite destinations to fly are Paris and various parts of Europe, destinations he enjoys for their beauty and unique experiences. However, one view remains especially unforgettable, witnessing the sunrise over Cape Town, South Africa, from the cockpit.

“The view during sunrise in Cape Town is truly breathtaking,” he recalled. “Moments like that remind you how extraordinary this career can be.”

Retirement

Throughout his remarkable career, Captain Khairulirwan holds two moments especially close to his heart: earning his title as Captain after years of hard work and intensive training, and witnessing his father’s retirement from the airline industry.

“Becoming a captain was one of my proudest achievements,” he said. “But seeing my father retire after his own incredible journey was equally meaningful. It felt like a full-circle moment.”

After 25 years in aviation, Captain Khairulirwan continues to embrace the skies with the same passion that first inspired him as a child. His journey is a powerful testament to dedication, resilience, and the enduring influence of family.

This World Pilots’ Day, Captain Khairulirwan Kamaruddin stands as a symbol of excellence in aviation honoring not only the profession, but also the legacy of those who inspire future generations to dream, train, and soar. – NMH

In the world of aviation, leadership is often tested not during growth but during uncertainty. For Malaysia’s biggest low cost carriers, AirAsia X, that moment is now.

With fuel prices rising sharply, geopolitical tensions lingering and global aviation markets becoming increasingly unpredictable, the Group is entering a phase that demands not just operational strength but clarity in leadership and discipline in decision-making. But AirAsia X is doing something rare: turning challenge into opportunity.

The appointment of Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim as Independent Non-Executive Chairman signals exactly that shift. His leadership brings independent oversight and a long-term perspective that is critical as AirAsia X consolidates its seven airlines into a unified, cohesive group. The move reflects a broader emphasis on disciplined growth, resilience, and operational excellence.

Tony Fernandes welcomes the newest leadership from AirAsia X during a recent media briefing, marking a fresh chapter for the long-haul carrier.

Staying Grounded While Moving Forward

Despite the volatility, AirAsia X is not retreating. Instead, it is choosing to stay anchored to what it understands best, its Asean network.

At the recent media briefing happened in Red Q, CEO of Air Asia X, Bo Lingam has insisted that the regional demand remains resilient, and Kuala Lumpur continues to serve as the Group’s core hub, not just operationally, but strategically. It provides stability in a landscape where long-haul travel patterns can shift quickly.

At the same time, the airline is keeping its eyes firmly on long-term ambitions. AirAsia X Founder and Advisor, Tony Fernandes reaffirmed the Group’s unwavering commitment to developing the Bahrain hub, despite current uncertainties. The Bahrain hub represents a broader strategic vision to seamlessly connect Asia with the Middle East and Europe, an expansion that underscores confidence in the airline’s growth trajectory, even as the Group remains prudent about near-term market challenges.

Steering Through Volatility

Global jet fuel prices have surged to more than double 2025 levels, putting immediate pressure on the airline industry. While many carriers rely heavily on hedging strategies, AirAsia X is taking a more agile approach. Instead of locking in fuel prices, the Group is focusing on real-time operational decisions: reallocating capacity to stronger-performing routes, implementing a one-off fuel surcharge to manage costs, and leveraging Fly-Thru connectivity via Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to capture demand efficiently.

AirAsia X CEO Bo Lingam confirmed that fuel supply from Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is secured until June, with additional procurement underway for the following months. While global concerns over fuel shortages and rising prices remain, the airline is optimistic that continued fuel availability will allow operations to remain stable.

This combination of operational flexibility and proactive planning allows AirAsia X to respond dynamically to shifting markets rather than being locked into rigid financial positions. It reflects a broader shift in aviation leadership philosophy: in uncertain environments, adaptability and speed often outperform traditional hedging strategies.

AirAsia X – Balancing Discipline with Boldness

Group CEO Bo Lingam explains it clearly: “We are optimising our network, reallocating capacity to stronger-performing routes, and negotiating with partners to contain costs. As we reactivate our full fleet, unit costs improve, and strengthening Asean currencies act as a natural buffer.”

In conclusion, AirAsia X is turning challenges into opportunities. Strong demand across Asean shows the resilience of its network and the growing appetite for regional travel.

By strengthening Kuala Lumpur as a key hub, using Fly-Thru connectivity and reallocating capacity to top-performing routes, the airline is combining strategic planning with operational flexibility. Targeted fare adjustments, cost management and fleet optimisation show a leadership approach that is disciplined and forward-looking.

With stronger Asean currencies as a natural buffer and a focus on long-term growth, AirAsia X is not just navigating turbulence. It is positioning itself to grow stronger and connect Asia with the world. – NMH

When the Global Sumud Flotilla set sail towards Gaza, it was not just another humanitarian mission. It was a voyage of conscience, a collective cry against injustice, against silence, and against the ongoing breach of international law that the blockade of Gaza represents.

For Malaysians, this is not a distant story on the evening news. Our fellow citizens are on those boats. They are singers, students, activists, and volunteers, ordinary people doing extraordinary things to defend the dignity of a besieged population and their courage deserves not only our admiration, but our unwavering support.

Their mission was not merely about the tonnage of food and medical supplies, which were critically important but about the cost of empathy. They understood that the price of challenging a long-standing naval blockade was their own freedom, and they chose to pay it willingly to deliver a singular, powerful symbol of hope. They understood that a prayer and an action must come hand in hand.

Malaysians on Board: Ordinary Citizens, Extraordinary Courage

For the 23 Malaysians on board, the journey was a pilgrimage of conscience.

They traveled thousands of miles from a nation with deep, unwavering solidarity for the Palestinian people. Their training included preparing for communication blackout, water cannon assaults, and, ultimately, military interception.

Malaysian activists, including celebrities, join the Global Sumud Flotilla to deliver aid and show solidarity with Gaza.

This was a non-violent strategy executed with military-like precision.

As the vessels were surrounded, the activists did not resist. They documented, they prayed, and they prepared their final video messages.

Malaysian celebrity, Zizi Kirana in a pre-recorded statement released upon interception, stated: “If you are watching this video, it means I have been abducted… Our mission was peaceful, non-violent, and fully in compliance with international law.”

Malaysian celebrity, Zizi Kirana is among the activists on a mission with the Global Sumud Flotilla

This message was the strategic core of the mission. By remaining unarmed and compliant, they forced the intercepting power to act against unarmed civilians delivering aid.

The commitment of the Malaysian delegation, organized under Sumud Nusantara, was measured not just in collective political will but in profound personal sacrifice.

Abdul Rahim Azhari,33 year old made a personal sacrifice to join the Global Sumud Flottila

A Personal Mission

For Abdul Rahim Azhari, a 33-year-old father, the mission to break the siege on Gaza demanded a commitment that transcended fundraising appeals.

Rahim made the ultimate donation, he sold his family car, a Proton X50, to personally fund his participation and contribute directly to the aid cargo.

“I needed to buy the basic food necessities for our brothers and sisters in Gaza,” Rahim stated before his departure.

Rahim’s choice to sell his car shows what the movement truly believes, that caring for the people trapped in Gaza is more important than his own comfort.

The Moral Weight of the Blockade

The Sumud (Steadfastness) of the Malaysian activists was not just personal, it was national. Their sacrifice has unified the country, with both the Prime Minister and His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim strongly condemning the interception and demanding their immediate release.

37 vessels in the global sumud flotilla were detained by Israeli forces, including Malaysia

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim described the mission as a “noble symbol of borderless humanitarianism,” noting that the detention of volunteers carrying only food supplies “goes against universal humanitarian values.”

The moral insight here is crucial.

The flotilla’s act of defiance forced the blockade to become publicly visible again. It exposed the military measure as an effective instrument of collective punishment.

The true blockade is not merely a few nautical miles of sea, it is the wall of international silence that has long surrounded Gaza.

The activists who were detained during their mission by the Israeli forces on board one of the Flotillas

The boats may now be towed to port in Ashdod, and the activists awaiting deportation, but the core objective has been achieved, to break the silence for the world to know that this was an ultimate fight and justice for the humanity.

Sumud: More Than A Flotilla, A Reflection

The Global Sumud Flotilla is not just about boats, sails, or aid packages. It is about conscience. It is about whether the international order that says “rules matter” will mean anything when civilians suffer.

The word sumud in Arabic means “steadfastness.” It is the philosophy of enduring oppression with resilience and dignity. This flotilla embodies that spirit, carrying food, medical aid, and messages of solidarity to a population that has endured almost two decades of blockade.

The blockade has not only strangled Gaza’s economy but also denied its people access to adequate healthcare, electricity, and reconstruction materials. In doing so, it violates both international humanitarian law and basic principles of human rights.

For Malaysia, the flotilla has revealed bravery in ordinary people, artists, faith-leaders, students. It has revealed a moral alignment with what our law, our treaties, and our values demand. And it has revealed that an act of compassion at sea can shine a harsh light on violations that too often escape accountability.

Let us not allow the actions of 40 vessels to be treated as a fringe event. Let them be a mirror: reflecting what we stand for and what we are prepared to resist. – NMH

AirAsia X is set to bridge two continents with the launch of its first-ever direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul, offering travellers a faster, more convenient route to one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

Beginning 14 November 2025, Istanbul, the legendary city in Turkiye where East meets West, will be connected directly to Kuala Lumpur with four weekly flights on AirAsia X, opening up a new era of travel between Southeast Asia and one of the most storied destinations in the world.

For travellers, Istanbul is more than a city, it’s an experience shaped by thousands of years of history, layered with culture, architecture, and traditions from both Europe and Asia.

From the grandeur of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque to the lively bustle of Istiklal Avenue, it offers travellers a journey through time and taste in every neighbourhood. By day, you can sail across the Bosphorus, wandering between continents in just 20 minutes. By night, you can lose yourself in rooftop views, sipping Turkish tea as the city’s lights reflect in the strait below.

Vibrant Gateway

With this new connection, flights will land at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) a vibrant gateway offering more than 150 onward destinations across Türkiye, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. From here, travellers can easily venture to the fairy-tale landscapes of Cappadocia, the ancient ruins of Ephesus, the turquoise coastlines of Antalya, or even further afield into the heart of Eastern Europe.

“As the only city in the world built on two continents, Istanbul perfectly captures our vision to bridge Asia and beyond through affordable, medium-haul travel. This is a strategic decision that strengthens our network, creates more pathways for business collaboration, and enhances access to new experiences for travellers around the world,” said CEO of Air Asia X, Benyamin Ismail.

“Istanbul isn’t just about landmarks, it’s about moments like hearing the sound of the muezzin carry across both continents, tasting baklava or standing on the Galata Bridge with fishermen on one side and ferries gliding past on the other. We’re excited to make these experiences more accessible to travellers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, and beyond.” said H.E. Emir Salim Yüksel, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Malaysia.

Umrah Package via Istanbul by AirAsia X

For Muslim travellers, the launch also introduces the Umrah Plus Istanbul package via ikhlas.com, combining a spiritual journey to Makkah and Madinah with a few days in Istanbul a perfect blend of faith, history, and discovery.

For travellers from Turkiye and Europe, this new route offers effortless access to Southeast Asia’s jewels from the beaches of Thailand and Bali to the heritage streets of Penang and Melaka, all within a single network. Likewise, for Malaysians and their Southeast Asian neighbours, Istanbul now stands as a gateway to an entirely new world of travel possibilities.

Ceo of Air Asia X, Benyamin Ismail (centre) with the cabin crew

Tourism players say the new service will benefit both regions: Southeast Asia’s beaches and heritage cities will become more accessible to Turkish and European tourists, while Malaysians gain direct access to Türkiye’s iconic destinations such as Cappadocia, Ephesus, Antalya, and the vibrant districts of Istanbul.

The launch comes as Malaysia and Türkiye deepen bilateral ties, with growing cooperation in tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Turkish visitor numbers to Malaysia are expected to rise sharply following the introduction of direct connectivity, while outbound travel from Malaysia to Türkiye has already seen consistent growth in recent years.

Affordable Alternative

With this addition, AirAsia X strengthens its competitive position in the long-haul low-cost market, offering travellers an affordable alternative for one of the most in-demand routes linking Southeast Asia to Europe.

AirAsia X will operate the Turkey route using the Airbus A330 aircraft, which is well-suited for long-haul flights due to its larger capacity and extended range. – NMH

Cycling legend and national icon Datuk Azizulhasni Awang, better known as the Pocket Rocketman, takes his legacy beyond the velodrome as the new face of MHsports. His next mission? Empowering the next generation of Malaysians to dream big, ride far, and never give up.

Rise of the Rocketman

Long before the world knew his name, or nickname Pocket Rocketman, Datuk Azizulhasni Awang was just a boy from Dungun, Terengganu, with a second-hand bicycle and a heart full of ambition. Raised in a modest household as the eighth of nine children, his early years were far removed from the glamour of global competition. But his determination was already world-class.

Nicknamed the “Pocket Rocketman” for his compact frame and explosive power, Datuk Azizulhasni’s rise in the world of track cycling is nothing short of extraordinary. His breakthrough came when he joined the national team in the early 2000s, later training under renowned coach John Beasley in Melbourne. From that point on, he was unstoppable — claiming the World Champion title in 2017, winning bronze at Rio 2016, and silver at Tokyo 2020.

But medals, while glittering, are only a part of his story.

Rocketman’s New Mission: MHsports and Beyond

“It’s not about how fast you go. It’s about how far you’re willing to dream.” – Rocketman Datuk Azizulhasni Awang

Now, the Rocketman is venturing beyond the velodrome. As the newly appointed ambassador for MHsports, a Malaysia Airlines initiative under Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), Datuk Azizulhasni enters a new phase of his journey — one focused not on personal achievement, but national impact.

“Success isn’t just about standing on a podium,” he says. “It’s about how many people you can lift along the way. I’ve always believed that real legacy is measured in lives touched.”

In his role with MHsports, Datuk Azizulhasni will work closely with the airline to support Malaysian athletes both logistically and emotionally — helping them navigate the often-overlooked challenges of international competition, from travel fatigue to mental pressure.

A Platform With Purpose

MHsports was introduced by Malaysia Airlines as a long-term commitment to national sports development. It offers more than flights — it offers partnership. Athletes under MHsports receive holistic support, including travel assistance, media visibility, and strategic brand alignment.

“Datuk Azizulhasni’s relentless drive, unshakeable perseverance, and resilience mirror the values we hold at Malaysia Airlines,” said Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, CEO of Malaysia Airlines Group. “He is the perfect fit to represent MHsports and inspire the future of Malaysian sports.”

With his global reputation, humble roots, and dedication to the next generation, the Rocketman is an ideal ambassador. His story resonates with every young Malaysian dreaming of the impossible — and reminds them that their dreams are valid, no matter where they begin.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Datuk Azizulhasni is already known for his work mentoring budding cyclists, but his impact reaches far beyond the sport. He frequently visits schools, speaks at youth forums, and participates in motivational campaigns across Malaysia.

One of his key messages? That greatness is not reserved for the privileged.

“I come from a small town, a simple background. What I had was belief. And a lot of hard work. I want every kid to know — if I can do it, so can you.”

His outreach isn’t just symbolic. In recent years, he’s helped raise funds for community sports programmes, collaborated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and supported initiatives aimed at closing the opportunity gap between urban and rural youth.

The Mental Battle Behind the Medals

While his physical strength is legendary, it’s the Rocketman’s mental tenacity that sets him apart. In 2022, he underwent open-heart surgery — a life-altering event that could have ended his career. But just months later, he was back on the bike, training, competing, and winning.

“I had to rebuild myself — not just my body, but my mindset,” he said in an earlier interview. “And I think that’s the part of the story people don’t see. You fall. You fail. You fear. But you keep going.”

That spirit — of resilience and renewal — now becomes a core part of his MHsports role. As the Rocketman, he embodies more than speed. He represents the courage to keep moving forward, even when the road is steep.

The Bigger Picture: Malaysia on the Global Stage

Malaysia has long produced world-class athletes, but support structures haven’t always kept pace. Programmes like MHsports mark a turning point — offering athletes the tools, networks, and platforms they need to thrive internationally.

By tapping into iconic figures like Datuk Azizulhasni, MHsports bridges the gap between aspiration and action. It creates a culture of encouragement, where young talents aren’t just spotted but sustained. And it brings Malaysian sports closer to the world — one flight, one athlete, and one dream at a time.

Rocketman in Motion: What’s Next?

At 36, Datuk Azizulhasni shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to train and compete while balancing his ambassadorial duties. His eyes are still set on the next Olympics, but his heart is firmly rooted in building something greater than himself.

“I ride for my country. I ride for the kampung kids. I ride to show what’s possible,” he says. “But now, I also want to give back. This chapter with MHsports is just the beginning.”

Legacy That Lifts

The Rocketman has never just been about the bike. He’s about belief — in oneself, in others, and in the power of perseverance. His journey from Dungun to the world stage is a blueprint of what’s possible when talent meets tenacity. And now, through MHsports, that journey becomes a bridge for countless others to follow.

As he once said: “It’s not about how fast you go. It’s about how far you’re willing to dream.” – NMH

With over 250 bird species recorded in its lush canopies, this tranquil hill station has earned its reputation as one of the world’s premier bird-watching destinations.

Organized by Tourism Pahang, the Fraser’s Hill International Bird-Watching Race brings together birding enthusiasts from around the world to experience this avian haven. Recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, Fraser’s Hill offers an unparalleled environment for bird-watchers.

From vibrant sunbirds to the elusive mountain peacock-pheasant, the forests echo with melodies that enchant nature lovers, photographers, and ornithologists alike.

A Race Unlike Any Other In Fraser’s Hill

Each year, Fraser’s Hill takes centre stage with the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race, a unique event where teams compete not for speed, but for the sharpest eyes and keenest ears. Birders from around the globe flock to this highland retreat, binoculars in hand and checklists at the ready, eager to spot as many species as possible within the set timeframe.

More Than Just Birds

The Bird Race isn’t just about feathered creatures. It champions a broader mission: To introduce bird-watching as a healthy, family-friendly outdoor activity as well as raising awareness about the importance of conserving our fragile ecosystems.

Among the many species spotted, Ian was most captivated by the Scarlet-backed Flowerpeckers. ‘It was truly amazing to see both the male and female together on a quiet Sunday morning,’ he shared. ‘Being able to recognise and identify them using the field guide added a whole new level of excitement to the experience.’ The vivid colours and distinctive markings of the tiny birds left a lasting impression on the first-time participant.”

When asked about his two-day experience at Fraser’s Hill, Ian couldn’t hide his enthusiasm. He extended his heartfelt thanks to Tourism Pahang for hosting such a memorable event.

“There were so many participants and teams, but everything was incredibly well-organised,” he said. “The atmosphere was buzzing — from stalls showcasing birdwatching gear and guidebooks to conservation NGOs sharing their work.

“The weather was just perfect, and the wildlife didn’t disappoint either. I spotted both new and familiar bird species, and even caught glimpses of squirrels and langurs. But what stood out the most was the warm, friendly vibe that made the whole experience so enjoyable.

Takeoff to touchdown is far more than just adeparture and arrival. In the world of aviation, it embodies something deeper: safety, responsibility, and discipline.

Being an airline pilot isn’t simply about flying planes; it’s about shouldering the immense responsibility of hundreds of lives on board. It’s a calling, not just a profession—one that demands unwavering focus, capability, and heart. Getting passengers safely from one destination to another isn’t just a routine task; it’s a lifelong commitment built on trust and duty, certainly more than just takeoff and touchdown.

In celebration of World Pilot’s Day on Sunday, Muhammad Saiful Bahari, a 34-year-old senior first officer, offers a rare glimpse into his journey through the skies, sharing personal insights and reflections on life in the cockpit.

A Uniform Of Pride

For Saiful Bahari, being an airline pilot is more than just a job—it’s an identity. Every time he dons his uniform, it fills him with a deep sense of pride.

“It gives me the greatest joy to wear the uniform. It’s not a fashion statement; you have to earn it, and I wear it proudly,” he says. “I share that pride with thousands of other aviators from different walks of life. In the cockpit, backgrounds fade away. When we’re in uniform, we are uniform—no you, no me, no individuality.”

Saiful Bahari pictured with a colleague working for an airline company in Malaysia, where they are about to takeoff

Behind Every Flight & Before Takeoff : Physical and Mental Preparation Is Key

Saiful shared that the life of a pilot demands more than just showing up for a flight—it begins long before takeoff. Preparation is crucial.

A pilot’s job starts with proper rest to ensure full mental sharpness. Managing health, updating tools, and staying informed about the latest procedures are daily responsibilities.

“We follow the principle of ‘Man, Machine, Environment’—checking our own fitness, the aircraft’s readiness, and the operational conditions,” Saiful explains. “Ninety percent of the work happens on the ground through careful planning and risk assessment. Once in the air, it’s about safe and precise execution. During takeoff and landings, we are transitioning from a phase to another, at high speeds. Not only we have to make decisions within a split-second, we also have to be accurate, combined with handling skills. This is where experience comes in valuable. Every second counts.”

Every decision, he adds, comes down to three vital checks: Is it safe? Is it legal? Is it economical? All three must align.

The Golden Rules of Flying

The golden rules of flying, he notes, are simple yet sacred: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.

But with irregular schedules and minimal rest, how do pilots manage?

“Your mental sharpness relies heavily on being well-rested,” Saiful says. “It’s ideal, but our roster challenges the body. One day you’re sleeping at 9 pm to wake up at 3 am for a 6 am duty. Other days, you’re still at the departure gate at 9 pm, only finishing duty at 10 the next morning. So, first on the list is always proper rest. We spend most of our days off-ground and when we do step on it, most of our time is spent sleeping to acclimatise to our schedule. I’m now a married man, and so I spend my day off listening to wife unload her tales and adventures when I was away. However, the company I’m employed with has amazing roster. I work 15 days a month and earn 4 times more than I did back home in Malaysia. Another 15 days are spent cooking, reading, working out and cafe hunting with the wife. Good work-life balance”. He quips.

Debunking Myths: Big Jets vs. Small Planes

Another common question to address: are smaller airplanes safer than big jets?

“In terms of safety, the size of the plane doesn’t play a significant role. Big jets are more advanced and have greater system redundancies. Every aircraft has its own operating procedures, and as long as pilots don’t deviate from them, it will be a safe flight.”

Saiful captured doing his first walkaround in the then-new airline

A Family of Uniform : How Dreams Took Flight

But how did a young boy’s dream of flying an airplane take root?

Saiful credits his family for inspiring his journey into aviation.

“I was raised by a navy man and a nurse—both wore uniforms in their professions and displayed incredible professionalism and discipline,” he shares.

The Tough Reality : A Career of Resilience

As the conversation wrapped up, Saiful reflected on the mindset needed to thrive in aviation.
“You must be willing to accept comments and feedback—then learn from them, regardless of who they come from. That’s where growth and knowledge happen, both inside and outside of the cockpit,” he emphasized. “Communication skills are underrated in this profession. There’s an art to it.” – NMH
