Motherhood pressure in Malaysia remains entrenched as married couples are still expected to have children soon after marriage, despite fertility rates dropping to historic lows. Sivaa Tangai Raju has the story

KUALA LUMPUR: Motherhood in Malaysia is often closely linked with marriage, with couples frequently questioned on when they plan to have children soon after tying the knot.

While societal expectations surrounding motherhood remain deeply rooted, some couples are intentionally delaying parenthood for various reasons, including career growth, financial stability and personal goals.

It’s a fact to agree that motherhood pressure continues to persist in Malaysia despite changing social and economic realities across different communities.

According to the Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW), the country’s total fertility rate had fallen to a historic low of 1.6 children per woman.

Expected motherhood

However, its Programme Officer, Sharmilah Muniandy, said the declining fertility rate has not eased social pressure on married couples to have children, adding that motherhood is still widely treated as an expectation rather than a personal choice.

“Motherhood continues to be framed as a normative expectation for women rather than an individual choice. This perception persists due to deeply rooted cultural and religious values centralising family and procreation.

“Gender norms further reinforce this by associating caregiving roles primarily with women, while mainstream dialogue on child free or non traditional life choices remains limited,” she said.

Sharmilah said pressure surrounding parenthood often begins after marriage, with women frequently subjected to intrusive questions, comparisons and assumptions from society.

She added that women continue to bear more pressure than men, particularly when couples face fertility challenges or choose to delay having children.

“There is a tendency for women to be more scrutinised in cases of infertility, although it can affect both partners. Common patterns include women being assumed to be the sole cause, alongside greater pressure placed on them to seek medical treatment or intervention.

Emotional distress

“Women also tend to experience higher levels of emotional distress than men and in some cases report verbal abuse, psychological harm and other forms of mistreatment linked to infertility,” she said.

Sharmilah explained that women who choose to remain child free continue to face stigma in Malaysia, as they are often perceived as rejecting traditional family expectations.

At the same time, she noted that delaying parenthood is becoming increasingly common due to financial pressures and changing priorities, although judgment from society remains.

“Couples who prioritise career, financial stability or personal goals before having children usually encounter mixed responses. While there is growing recognition of economic realities, these choices can still attract judgment for delaying parenthood,” she said.

On the other hand, Metro IVF Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Lindy Bak Li Mei, said misconceptions surrounding fertility and delayed parenthood continue to shape public perception.

Before menopause

Lindy said pregnancy at an older age is still possible before menopause, especially when couples seek early advice from fertility specialists and understand the options available to them.

“As long as a woman has not reached menopause, the ovaries are still functioning and able to recruit eggs for fertilisation. Even at an advanced age, there is still hope that the recruited eggs will be able to produce a viable embryo.

“My suggestion is, please visit your fertility doctor to discuss it at such a critical age because the earlier couples seek advice, the better they can understand their fertility health and available options,” she said.

Lindy also stressed that infertility is not solely a women’s issue, noting that male and female factors contribute almost equally to difficulties in conceiving.

“Male and women factors are fairly equal in contributing to infertility, including unexplained fertility whereby both male and female are found to be within normal range of screening.

“This shows both husband and wife would have to be involved in their fertility screening as it takes both to make it work,” she said.

Echoing her, fertility specialist Dr Wong Wen Hao said advances in fertility treatment and assisted reproductive technology are continuing to give older couples opportunities to conceive later in life.

Wong told the media that advanced fertility techniques such as Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) are now helping specialists identify healthier embryos for implantation, particularly among older couples undergoing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment.

Maximise chances

“While natural pregnancy is very difficult after age 45, medical treatments like IVF can help couples maximise their chances using their own genetic material.

“Because donor options are generally restricted or unavailable in Malaysia, we use advanced tools like pre implantation genetic testing to find the best embryos for a healthy birth.

“For those intending to delay childbearing significantly, egg freezing, ideally before the age of 35, is a medically proven way to preserve biological potential for the future,” he said.

Wong further highlighted the emotional burden faced by couples struggling with infertility, saying public misconceptions and social pressure often worsen psychological distress.

He said infertility should be recognised as a medical condition rather than a personal failure, especially as many couples already face anxiety and emotional exhaustion throughout the process.

“Societal pressure from family and the community can lead to significant emotional distress, including clinical anxiety and social isolation, which only compounds the medical challenges couples are already facing,” he said. – NMH

Xtep ramps up Malaysia expansion with six new stores as the country’s running boom drives demand for performance gear.

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 April — Xtep is positioning Malaysia as a key growth engine for its Southeast Asia ambitions, rolling out six new stores to capture rising demand for performance running gear.

The China-based sportswear group has opened outlets across Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan and Shah Alam, marking an early phase of its regional expansion strategy.

Shoppers at Xtep’s mono-brand store in Puchong first launched in November 2024. Now the company fully expands its retail footprint in Malaysia to tap growing demand for performance running gear.

The move comes as Malaysia’s running scene gathers pace, supported by government initiatives such as Malaysia Aktif and increased public spending on sports development. The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon alone drew about 42,000 participants in its latest edition, underscoring the scale of growing interest in endurance sports.

Xtep is positioning its outlets as hybrid retail and community spaces, with plans to host group training sessions and running events to deepen engagement with local runners.

The company is also introducing a performance running range designed for Malaysia’s climate and terrain, in line with a broader industry shift towards localised product development.

A 10km run planned in Kuala Lumpur has drawn strong early interest, highlighting growing appetite for structured amateur competition.

Strategic push by Xtep beyond China

Founded in 2001 and listed in Hong Kong, Xtep has evolved from a domestic sportswear player into a performance-focused running brand, sharpening its positioning in recent years.

The group has accelerated its international expansion strategy, with Southeast Asia identified as a key growth region. Malaysia stands out due to its established running community, supportive policy environment and rising consumer interest in fitness and active lifestyles.

Competition heats up

Xtep’s expansion comes amid intensifying competition in Malaysia’s sportswear segment, where global names such as Nike and Adidas, alongside regional players, continue to invest in both retail presence and community-building.

Industry observers say differentiation is increasingly driven by product innovation, localisation and sustained engagement with running communities.

For Xtep, scaling its footprint while embedding itself within Malaysia’s running ecosystem will be critical to building long-term traction in the region.

The six-store rollout signals the start of a broader expansion pipeline as the group deepens its push into Southeast Asia’s growing sports retail market. – NMH

The post Xtep Targets Malaysia As South-East Asia Growth Engine first appeared on NMH.

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 100 global brands were featured at the annual Friends & Family Sale (FFS) organised by Valiram, which drew shoppers to the Mayang Sari Ballroom at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur this week.

Held from March 9 to 13, the five-day event offered discounts of up to 80 per cent across categories including luxury fashion and accessories, fragrances and cosmetics, travel lifestyle products and Swiss watches.

Retail Portfolio

The ballroom was transformed into a series of curated “brand alleys”, allowing visitors to browse a wide selection of brands from Valiram’s retail portfolio in a thoughtfully organised shopping environment.

A Valiram spokesperson said the Friends & Family Sale reflects the group’s commitment to creating elevated retail experiences while offering customers exceptional value.

Shoppers browse branded footwear and lifestyle products during the annual Friends & Family Sale by Valiram at the Mayang Sari Ballroom, JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, where more than 100 global brands were offered at discounts of up to 80%.

The evolution of the Friends & Family Sale mirrors the journey of Valiram itself. What began decades ago as a modest warehouse sale has grown into a highly anticipated retail event staged in one of Kuala Lumpur’s most prominent hotels. The transformation reflects the company’s own rise since its beginnings in 1935, when the family business started as a small textile trading operation before expanding into one of Southeast Asia’s leading luxury retail groups.

Highlight

The event also attracted both local shoppers and regional visitors, many of whom see the annual sale as a highlight on Kuala Lumpur’s retail calendar.

Junita, a 48-year-old tourist from Indonesia, said she often plans her visits to Malaysia around the event.

A regular at FFS through the years, Junita from Indonesia says: I try to always plan my trips around the FFS, because I love their selection of shoes, sunglasses and body soaps.

“I often come to Malaysia during Ramadan and enjoy shopping while I’m here. I try to always plan my trips around the FFS because I love their selection of shoes, sunglasses and body soaps,” she said.

“The Bukit Bintang area also has such a glamorous atmosphere, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.”

For freelancer Yurika, 34, the event provided an opportunity to explore brands she does not usually encounter.

“I came to the FFS because one of my favourite brands was here. The venue was easy to access, and it was fun to discover many brands that I don’t usually see,” she said.

“The selection was good and I really enjoyed the experience, although many of the items were from past seasons.”

Returning Shoppers

Returning shoppers also welcomed the combination of premium brands and attractive discounts.

“This is my third FFS sale — I look forward to it every year,” said Sofia Elena, a 25-year-old human resources executive.

Third time’s a charm, Sofia Elena looks forward to the FFS sale every year.

“I loved the deals and the great premium selection of brands. The retail associates were also well prepared with product knowledge and everyone was always smiling, which gave me a really great experience.”

Beyond the shopping experience, visitors were also able to take part in various promotional activities throughout the event.

Shoppers who spent a minimum of RM700 using participating partners including HSBC, Maybank or Atome received gifts with purchase and a chance to participate in a Spin-the-Wheel activity for additional rewards.

Customers spending RM1,000 or more also received a voucher for a Godiva soft serve, while qualifying shoppers stood a chance to enter a lucky draw to win an iPhone 16 Pro.

The Growth of Valiram

Beyond retail events such as the Friends & Family Sale, Valiram has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s leading luxury and lifestyle retailers. The group operates across multiple channels including downtown boutiques, travel retail outlets, airport stores and e-commerce platforms, with a presence in markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Macau, Vietnam and Hong Kong.

In recent years, the company has also expanded beyond retail into hospitality, including the acquisition of the Impiana KLCC Hotel, reflecting its broader ambitions in lifestyle and experiential businesses.

As the crowds made their final rounds on the last day, the enduring popularity of the Friends & Family Sale underscored Valiram’s ability to blend luxury retail with experience-driven shopping. – NMH

From Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” to powerful local anthems, Unveiling Uniqueness 2 celebrated the beauty of diversity and the real meaning of inclusion.

I walked into the four-hour concert called “Unveiling Uniqueness 2” feeling excited, because this wasn’t just any musical evening. Hosted by Musicians for Musicians (MFM) together with Music Mart, and supported by Yayasan Sime Darby and The British International School Kuala Lumpur (BISKL), this stage was for people with special needs — young and adult performers who have autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, vision or hearing impairments, and more.

As the lights dimmed, the whole auditorium burst into the opening number: the singers, young and older, came together and launched into “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Right there I felt it: music as a bridge, not a barrier.

Unveiling Uniqueness – A Unique Story

I watched artiste after artiste bring their own story. One singer from Sarawak, Emily Chai, flew in especially to deliver with strength — I heard her sing “Gemilang”. Then there was a little powerhouse group, Magika — children aged 7-12 who are hearing and speech-impaired — performing with sign language rhythm to a K-pop track and a local favourite song. It was moving beyond words.

On stage too were established stars: Francissca Peter and Frankie Tan. Francissca sang “Sekadar di Pinggiran” and “Step by Step” and danced with the special-needs artistes. She said she feels the special ones “are better than me” in many ways, and hoped more people support their talent. Frankie Tan — who has polio and is known for his country songs — performed “Forever Young” and got the crowd cheering.

One moment stuck with me: the bass and drums faded, the lights softened, and the words of Aidel Rahman Morshidi rang out after the opening piece. He presented flowers to Francissca. He danced with such joy. He reminded the audience that capability is not defined by disability.

Then there was petite Siti Nur Aisyah Shahimee who danced all alone on the big stage, yet nothing seems to faze her, as though she was born to be on stage.

Petite Nur Aisyah Shahimee danced all alone on the stage as though she was born for the stage

The Volunteering Committee

Behind the scenes, people like Edwin Nathaniel (Chair of the organising committee) and Hasnah Abdul Rahman (committee member) emphasised that music is a universal language, and that this event is more than entertainment — it’s about giving voice, shining light, and celebrating diversity.

The other committee members, Dr Tan Swee Chuan, Rosalind Khoo, Tan Li-Ling, Cindy Deborah Vyner and Sonia Kirby worked tirelessly, voluntarily, behind the scene. I saw them running after the performers who, for some of them, when they are off stage, can be different than their on-stage personae. This brings a whole new level to the word voluntarism. They were artistically introduced to the audience during the song Volare where some of the musicians were on wheelchairs wearing Mexican hats and the music got everyone moving to the beat.

While the performers were doing Volare, the committee members were introduced. Photo taken by Veronica Ang, mother of Aidan She, the truly hyper violinist in the video.

Perfect

There was a little bazaar too — special-needs entrepreneurs were selling food, handicrafts and handmade items before the concert kicked off. It felt right: a celebration of creativity, empowerment and togetherness.

By the end of the night, as everyone joined on stage to sing “Tomorrow” and “RISE!”, I realised this wasn’t just music. It was unity, hope, and heart. The special-needs performers weren’t just guests on stage — they were the stars. I left remembering that diversity is not a limitation; it’s our strength. – NMH

The post Unveiling Uniqueness: A Concert That Redefined What Talent Looks Like first appeared on NMH.

Unveiling Uniqueness – Persembahan Yang Penuh Kreativiti

Sarah Ow menyanyikan lagu ‘A Thousand Years’ dan Siti Nor Aishah menari mengikut rentak lagu ‘Dont Let Me Down’. All boys band, Zimi’J kemudiannya muncul dengan lagu retro ‘Summer of 69’.

Muzik Adalah Bahasa Universal

– NMH

The post Unveiling Uniqueness 2, Meraikan Kepelbagaian Melalui Muzik first appeared on NMH.

AirAsia X is set to bridge two continents with the launch of its first-ever direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul, offering travellers a faster, more convenient route to one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

Beginning 14 November 2025, Istanbul, the legendary city in Turkiye where East meets West, will be connected directly to Kuala Lumpur with four weekly flights on AirAsia X, opening up a new era of travel between Southeast Asia and one of the most storied destinations in the world.

For travellers, Istanbul is more than a city, it’s an experience shaped by thousands of years of history, layered with culture, architecture, and traditions from both Europe and Asia.

From the grandeur of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque to the lively bustle of Istiklal Avenue, it offers travellers a journey through time and taste in every neighbourhood. By day, you can sail across the Bosphorus, wandering between continents in just 20 minutes. By night, you can lose yourself in rooftop views, sipping Turkish tea as the city’s lights reflect in the strait below.

Vibrant Gateway

With this new connection, flights will land at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) a vibrant gateway offering more than 150 onward destinations across Türkiye, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. From here, travellers can easily venture to the fairy-tale landscapes of Cappadocia, the ancient ruins of Ephesus, the turquoise coastlines of Antalya, or even further afield into the heart of Eastern Europe.

“As the only city in the world built on two continents, Istanbul perfectly captures our vision to bridge Asia and beyond through affordable, medium-haul travel. This is a strategic decision that strengthens our network, creates more pathways for business collaboration, and enhances access to new experiences for travellers around the world,” said CEO of Air Asia X, Benyamin Ismail.

Air Asia X CEO, Benyamin Ismail and the team at the event launching in Red Q

“Istanbul isn’t just about landmarks, it’s about moments like hearing the sound of the muezzin carry across both continents, tasting baklava or standing on the Galata Bridge with fishermen on one side and ferries gliding past on the other. We’re excited to make these experiences more accessible to travellers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, and beyond.” said H.E. Emir Salim Yüksel, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Malaysia.

Umrah Package via Istanbul by AirAsia X

For Muslim travellers, the launch also introduces the Umrah Plus Istanbul package via ikhlas.com, combining a spiritual journey to Makkah and Madinah with a few days in Istanbul a perfect blend of faith, history, and discovery.

For travellers from Turkiye and Europe, this new route offers effortless access to Southeast Asia’s jewels from the beaches of Thailand and Bali to the heritage streets of Penang and Melaka, all within a single network. Likewise, for Malaysians and their Southeast Asian neighbours, Istanbul now stands as a gateway to an entirely new world of travel possibilities.

Ceo of Air Asia X, Benyamin Ismail (centre) with the cabin crew

Tourism players say the new service will benefit both regions: Southeast Asia’s beaches and heritage cities will become more accessible to Turkish and European tourists, while Malaysians gain direct access to Türkiye’s iconic destinations such as Cappadocia, Ephesus, Antalya, and the vibrant districts of Istanbul.

The launch comes as Malaysia and Türkiye deepen bilateral ties, with growing cooperation in tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Turkish visitor numbers to Malaysia are expected to rise sharply following the introduction of direct connectivity, while outbound travel from Malaysia to Türkiye has already seen consistent growth in recent years.

Affordable Alternative

With this addition, AirAsia X strengthens its competitive position in the long-haul low-cost market, offering travellers an affordable alternative for one of the most in-demand routes linking Southeast Asia to Europe.

AirAsia X will operate the Turkey route using the Airbus A330 aircraft, which is well-suited for long-haul flights due to its larger capacity and extended range. – NMH

A Race Unlike Any Other In Fraser’s Hill

Each year, Fraser’s Hill takes centre stage with the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race, a unique event where teams compete not for speed, but for the sharpest eyes and keenest ears.
Among the many species spotted, Ian was most captivated by the Scarlet-backed Flowerpeckers. ‘It was truly amazing to see both the male and female together on a quiet Sunday morning,’ he shared. ‘Being able to recognise and identify them using the field guide added a whole new level of excitement to the experience.’ The vivid colours and distinctive markings of the tiny birds left a lasting impression on the first-time participant.”

When asked about his two-day experience at Fraser’s Hill, Ian couldn’t hide his enthusiasm. He extended his heartfelt thanks to Tourism Pahang for hosting such a memorable event.

“There were so many participants and teams, but everything was incredibly well-organised,” he said. “The atmosphere was buzzing — from stalls showcasing birdwatching gear and guidebooks to conservation NGOs sharing their work.

“The weather was just perfect, and the wildlife didn’t disappoint either. I spotted both new and familiar bird species, and even caught glimpses of squirrels and langurs. But what stood out the most was the warm, friendly vibe that made the whole experience so enjoyable. We truly had a fantastic time and are already looking forward to coming back next year!”
