When her autistic son disappeared for several agonising hours, New Malaysia Herald Editor-in-Chief Datin Hasnah Abdul Rahman was reminded that there are no simple solutions when caring for autistic adults. In this personal reflection, she shares why well-intentioned advice often falls short and why Malaysia must move beyond awareness towards genuine understanding, compassion and inclusion.

For several agonising hours this Friday, my family searched desperately for my third son, Ahmad Ziqri, who is an autistic adult. Those were among the longest hours of my life.

Thankfully, our story ended well.

A special education teacher recognised him at a restaurant in Cheras. Her quick thinking, together with the kindness of her husband, restaurant staff, dedicated police officers, security personnel, the nearby Mall staff, residence and community groups, an extraordinary neighbour who helped us search, and countless Malaysians who shared our appeal on social media, brought Ziqri safely home.

As a mother, I will remain forever grateful.

But once the relief subsided, one thought kept returning to me: what an irony life can be.

As President of Pertubuhan Rentak, Irama, Seni & Ekspresi (R.I.S.E.), a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO), I spend much of my time advocating for neurodiverse young adults and their families. Our public initiative, R.I.S.E. – Rhythm Interactive Special Needs Enabler, was established to help build pathways beyond school and beyond awareness.

Yet during those long hours, none of those titles mattered.

I was not an advocate.

I was simply a mother searching for her son. And this was not the first time it happened, perhaps, not the last.

When Advice Doesn’t Fit Reality

Almost immediately after Ziqri was found, messages of support began pouring in, together with many well-intentioned suggestions.

“Get him an AirTag.” | “Buy him a GPS tracker.” | “Make him wear an identification bracelet.” | “Print your phone number on his T-shirt.”

Every suggestion came from a place of genuine concern.

The reality, however, is that autism is never one-size-fits-all.

We have already tried AirTags.

We have tried identification bracelets.

Neither worked.

Like many autistic adults, Ziqri has strong sensory preferences. If he dislikes wearing something, he simply removes it.

Sometimes he tears up clothes he no longer wants to wear.

Sometimes he throws them into the rubbish bin.

Not only his own clothes, but occasionally those belonging to his brothers as well.

Another suggestion was to print my phone number on his T-shirts.

Again, I understand the reasoning.

But as a mother, another fear immediately crossed my mind.

What if someone with bad intentions uses that information?

What if they realise he is vulnerable?

What if they decide to exploit that vulnerability?

Parents of autistic adults constantly find themselves balancing independence with protection.

There are rarely perfect answers.

When Misunderstanding Becomes The Bigger Challenge

This was not the first time Ziqri had been misunderstood.

Five years ago, what should have been his 25th birthday ended with him spending the night in a police lock-up following an incident in which he was very much misunderstood.

It was heartbreaking for our family.

A few days later, however, something extraordinary happened.

William Cheah and Yi-Lyn Chan, together with the Kembara Kitchen team and many kind-hearted friends and supporters, organised a special birthday celebration for Ziqri at a restaurant. Guests paid to attend, while my family and I were invited to join him so he could finally celebrate the birthday he had missed.

What began as one of the saddest birthdays of his life became one of his happiest.

That evening reminded me of something I have never forgotten.

Misunderstanding can wound. But kindness has an extraordinary ability to heal.

This week, as strangers once again stepped forward to help bring Ziqri home safely, I was reminded of that same lesson.

Beyond Awareness

For almost 30 years, I have watched Ziqri grow from an autistic child into an autistic adult.

Along the way, I have learned that while autism may not change, society’s understanding of it can — and must.

Many people know about autism.

Far fewer understand autistic adults.

When school ends, life does not suddenly become easier.

For many parents, the greatest challenge begins not when their child is diagnosed, but when the structured support of childhood ends and adulthood begins.

That is one of the reasons Pertubuhan Rentak, Irama, Seni & Ekspresi (R.I.S.E.) was established by my amazing committee and team members.

Through R.I.S.E. – Rhythm Interactive Special Needs Enabler, we hope to create pathways for neurodiverse young adults to continue learning, developing their talents, finding meaningful opportunities and living with greater independence.

But organisations alone cannot build an inclusive society.

Teachers build it.

Police officers build it.

Restaurant staff build it.

Neighbours build it.

Strangers build it.

Every act of understanding becomes another step towards a more compassionate Malaysia.

A Mother’s Hope

As I watched Ziqri sleeping peacefully after finally returning home — exhausted from an adventure only he truly understands — I realised that perhaps this was never just our family’s story.

It is the story of thousands of Malaysian families raising autistic adults who continue to navigate a world that often is not designed for them.

If our experience encourages even one person to pause before judging someone who behaves differently…

If it inspires one stranger to offer help instead of looking away…

If it reminds us that kindness can make all the difference…

… then perhaps some good has already come from one of the longest days of my life.

Autism does not end at childhood. Neither should our understanding.

For one day, every autistic child will become an autistic adult. Perhaps it is time we started preparing not just them for society, but society for them. – NMH

The opening notes of Circle of Life have long been synonymous with Disney’s The Lion King, but hearing them performed live by the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) was an entirely different experience.

Recently, my son Aidel and I were invited by Datin Jasmine Abdullah Heng, Chairperson of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Selangor Chapter and Vice Chairman of Dorsett Hotels Malaysia, to attend The Lion King Live in Concert at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s Plenary Hall.

What followed was an evening that reminded us of the extraordinary power of music, storytelling and shared experiences.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments came even before the first note was played.

As NSO Resident Conductor Eric Lee took to the stage, he surprised the audience by raising a plush Simba toy before taking his bow. The gesture sparked immediate laughter and applause throughout the hall.

I glanced at Aidel and saw him smiling.

It was such a simple, playful moment, yet it perfectly captured the spirit of the evening. Despite the grandeur of the venue, the size of the orchestra and the prestige of a Disney production, the concert never lost the sense of childlike wonder that lies at the heart of The Lion King.

The Lion King Through New Eyes

As the film began and the orchestra launched into the familiar score, The Lion King suddenly took on an entirely new dimension.

The music was no longer simply part of a soundtrack playing through cinema speakers. It was alive.

Every note, every swell of emotion and every dramatic moment unfolded in real time as dozens of musicians performed in perfect synchronisation with the film on screen.

For nearly two hours, the orchestra became an invisible character in the story itself.

Every triumphant scene felt grander. Every emotional moment felt deeper. Songs that I had heard countless times before seemed richer and more powerful when performed live.

Yet what touched me most was watching Aidel.

Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, Aidel is himself a neurodiverse performer and writer who has spent years developing his talents through music and the creative arts. Throughout the evening, I found myself observing not only the stage and screen, but also my son.

There was a quiet intensity in the way he watched the musicians. At times his eyes followed the conductor. At others, he seemed completely absorbed by the orchestra’s performance.

As a mother, it was a deeply moving sight.

I have seen Aidel perform on stage before and witnessed the confidence that music gives him. Yet this was different. Here was a young man who loves music experiencing an orchestra at the highest level, bringing a story he already knew and loved to life before his eyes.

It was a powerful reminder of how the arts can inspire, uplift and connect people regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.

Bringing Communities Together

The evening was made even more meaningful knowing that more than 100 refugee children and orphans from Rumah Charis were also attending through a special initiative jointly organised by MAH Selangor Chapter, the Kiwanis Club of Bukit Kiara and Dorsett Hotels Malaysia.

For many of these children, it was their first opportunity to experience a world-class theatrical production and live orchestral performance.

As Datin Jasmine aptly remarked during the event:

“Giving back to our community is at the very core of what we do. Seeing the sheer excitement, hearing their laughter, and watching their faces light up with pure wonder reminds us exactly why we champion these initiatives. We want to show these children that they belong in these spaces, and we hope this inspires them to dream boldly despite their circumstances.”

Looking around the hall, it was difficult not to see the truth in her words.

The children laughed together, gasped together and applauded together. For a few precious hours, labels, circumstances and hardships seemed to disappear.

What remained was the universal language of storytelling and music.

As I listened to Datin Jasmine speak about creating opportunities for children to dream beyond their circumstances, I could not help reflecting on my own journey with her.

Many years ago, Datin Jasmine was the General Manager of Sheraton Subang, now Dorsett Grand Subang, while I served as the hotel’s Director of Marketing Communications. Among our colleagues then was Mazuin Murtadza, a Sales Manager who, like me, would later become the mother of a son on the autism spectrum.

When I asked Datin Jasmine whether Mazuin and her three offsprings could also attend the concert, she immediately extended the invitation. It was a small gesture, perhaps, but one that reflected the spirit of inclusion that defined the evening.

The Lion King and the Circle of Life

Life eventually took us on different professional paths, and we lost touch over the years. It was only recently, at a Tourism Malaysia-Dorsett Hospitality International event, that Datin Jasmine and I reconnected.

Sitting in the audience that evening with Aidel beside me, I found myself reflecting on the irony of it all. The opening song of The Lion King is, after all, Circle of Life.

Here we were, years later, reunited not through the hospitality industry that first brought us together, but through an initiative dedicated to bringing joy, inspiration and inclusion to children from different walks of life.

In many ways, it felt like our own circle had come full circle.

As the final credits rolled and the orchestra received a well-deserved standing ovation, Aidel and I left with more than memories of an outstanding performance.

We left reminded that the arts have the power to bring people together, open minds and create moments of belonging.

And thanks to the vision of organisations willing to invest in such experiences, more children—including those who might otherwise never have the opportunity—are able to discover that magic for themselves.

For one unforgettable evening, Pride Rock came alive. So too did the hopes, dreams and imagination of every child fortunate enough to be there. – NMH

A Strong Message From Senator Isaiah

The event was officiated by Senator Isaiah D. Jacob, Head of the Persons with Disabilities Bureau Malaysia and Chair of the Commonwealth People with Disabilities for 2025–2028.

In his speech, the Senator stressed that people with special needs should not be viewed only with pity. Instead, society must open pathways and opportunities for them to grow, contribute meaningfully, and live with dignity.

He described himself not as “Orang Kurang Upaya” (OKU = Disabled Person) but Orang Kuat Upaya (Strong-Ability Person) — highlighting the strength and dignity in every individual.

This message became the heart of the entire symposium, organised by Kiwanis Malaysia Academy (KMA) under the Kiwanis Khir Johari Foundation, with support from the Selangor Cheshire Home (PPOC).

Keynote Speech: A Future That Is Inclusive

The symposium also featured a keynote by Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz titled:

“The Future is Inclusive: Advancing Equity in Education for Neurodiverse Learners Through Partnerships.”

He emphasised that the future of education must be based on inclusivity — ensuring fair opportunities for neurodiverse students.

He highlighted that cooperation between government, educational institutions, NGOs, and the community is essential so every student can access quality education and receive the support they need to reach their potential.

MySENSE: A New Ecosystem

One major achievement this year was the launch of MySENSE – Special Education Needs Support Exchange, a regional ecosystem that unites NGOs, educators, experts, and caregivers.

With the slogan “Building an Inclusive Future, Together,” MySENSE is driven by leading partners such as:

Majlis dirasmikan oleh Senator Tuan Isaiah D Jacob, Ketua Biro Orang Kurang Upaya Malaysia dan Pengerusi Commonwealth People with Disabilities bagi tahun 2025–2028. Dalam ucapan beliau, Senator Isaiah menekankan bahawa golongan berkeperluan khas tidak harus dilihat dengan simpati semata-mata. Sebaliknya, masyarakat perlu membuka laluan dan peluang agar mereka dapat berkembang, menyumbang secara bermakna dan membawa diri dengan penuh maruah.

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 October 2025 – After the overwhelming success of its debut last year, Unveiling Uniqueness is set to make a grand return with its second edition — promising a bigger, brighter, and more moving showcase of the extraordinary talents of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

Organised by Persatuan Pemuzik Malaysia (Musicians for Musicians, MFM), the concert will take place on Saturday, 15 November 2025, from 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm at The British International School of Kuala Lumpur.

Building on Last Year’s Momentum

Unveiling Uniqueness 2 – A Musical Celebration of Diversity continues the mission of empowering PwD musicians by giving them a platform to perform alongside seasoned professionals. This year’s concert introduces exciting new features, including performances by dancers with Down Syndrome, more challenging musical arrangements, and collaborations with recording artistes to create an elevated experience.

“This year we want to go further — not just in music, but in creating meaningful collaborations that inspire audiences and empower our musicians,” said Edwin Nathaniel, Organising Chairman.

A star-studded line-up in the works

While final confirmations are pending, renowned Malaysian artistes such as Dato’ Francissca Peter and Frankie Tan are expected to lend their voices to the show, performing alongside PwD musicians.

According to Organising Chairman, Edwin Nathaniel, their involvement underscores the event’s strong message of inclusion and recognition.

Personal stories of Courage and Collaboration

Among the performers is Raees Aryan Ezmir, a teenager on the autism spectrum who will sing and play the piano, this time accompanied by a full band of both PwD and non-PwD musicians.

According to his mother, Irin Putri Azmi, the experience marks a significant milestone:

“Usually Raees performs solo. But at Unveiling Uniqueness 2, he will collaborate with other musicians in a professional setting. This builds not only his confidence but also his ability to work as part of a team.”

Raees is one of more than 30 participants from across Malaysia, including Kelantan and the Klang Valley, selected for their outstanding performances in last year’s edition. All performers are volunteers who submitted recordings during the selection process.

Bigger Stage, Stronger Support for Unveiling Uniqueness 2

This year, the British International School of Kuala Lumpur has stepped forward as host venue, offering its facilities as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. With a larger space compared to last year, the concert will accommodate a bigger audience eager to witness this celebration of diversity.

More than music: A Message of Hope

Beyond the notes and rhythms, Unveiling Uniqueness 2 seeks to challenge stereotypes, shift perceptions, and remind society that true talent transcends physical or mental limitations.

Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of modern and traditional performances, designed not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire.

PETALING JAYA – Today we saw a different facet of funnyman Uncle Roger when he hosted the Autism Community from the Autism Cafe Project (ACP) at his new restaurant branch at IPC Damansara called, what else, Fuiyoh! It’s Uncle Roger, of course.

Garbed in his signature orange polo tshirt and THAT white Good Morning towel, Uncle Roger, despite his busy schedule, gave such a sweet smile and no customary tough words which put everyone, especially the special needs guests, at ease.

Quietly, since October 2024, ACP Founder Adli Yahya has been working tirelessly with Uncle Roger’s team to facilitate the recruitment of these special young adults to work at the Fuiyoh! cafes, beginning with discussions at their flagship outlet in Pavilion Bukit Bintang.

Long story short, Fuiyoh! now has four branches with more sprouting in the near future, and out of these, one of the branches – I-City Shah Alam – has three special needs young adults from ACP working there.

Celebrating Diversity in Autism

As April is widely accepted as World Autism month and ACP, together with Fuiyoh! It’s Uncle Roger, highlight their focus on the beautiful diversity in autism.

“It is critical to understand them individually, as each and every one of them has different abilities.

“After all, Autism affects people from all racial and socio-economic standings. As there seems to be an increase in the autism prevalence rate in Malaysia, there is therefore an urgent need to focus on proper therapy for the young ones and a concrete plan for those approaching adulthood and beyond,” explained Adli.

“Our collaboration with Uncle Roger focuses on constructing a safe and conducive working environment for them. The results have so far been simply fantastic. Our autistic staff, Luqman, Adrian and Adeeb, are simply thriving beautifully at their respective workplaces.”

Adli added that these truly special young adults are functioning as normally as can be expected of them within these win-win working conditions.

Fuiyoh! Is Serious

Uncle Roger appears to take this collaboration seriously and has encouraged staff participation as well.

“We’re honoured to be working alongside Autism Cafe Project to provide job opportunities for the autistic community and help them feel seen and supported,” said Nigel Ng, the man behind the popular Uncle Roger character.

According to Mel Azman, a parent of an autistic young adult, Alif, she felt so touched by the respect and care by the Uncle Roger’s team in providing opportunities for these autism young adults to work.

“There seems to be quite a number of autism young adults who are unemployed because prospective employees are hesitant about employing them.

Salute

“So what Adli and Nigel have done, plus all other employers who have taken in Alif’s peers to work, I salute them and thank them for giving this opportunity,” added Mel.

Certainly, employers who provide an opportunity to special needs young adults to work in their corporations and encourage their staff to guide the latter should be lauded for taking this bold step.

“Not everyone is willing to take extra time and effort to provide training, coupled with empathy, to develop our special kids to adjust to the corporate world. And for many of these employers who have approached us with their willingness, I respect and thank them,” said Adli. – NMH

KUALA LUMPUR – The RYTHM Foundation, the social impact initiative of the Qi Group, remains committed and active in undertaking programs to empower those in need, particularly in the field of education, as this aspect is considered crucial for the development of any community.

Head of RYTHM Foundation Santhi Periasamy said the foundation focuses on providing assistance to those in need of educational support, especially children who have difficulty accessing education such as those from the B40 group, living in remote areas and indigenous children.

“In terms of community development, we believe that education is key for without it, no community survives. Education is the only pathway and perhaps, the only answer to development.

“It is very sad to know how many communities out there in the world, in Malaysia (as well), who are deprived of equity and equality in education. There are so many things that can be done through education in many different modes and approaches which the Foundation is doing.

“For instance, we have a school in Petaling Jaya, a RYTHM Foundation initiative for the special needs, and we are doing a lot for the education of indigenous or Orang Asli children in Malaysia,” she told NMH when met at a tea with media session here recently.

Educational Programs By RYTHM Foundation

In terms of assisting with education for Orang Asli children, Santhy said more than 100 students from the ethnic group, covering areas in Sabah and Pahang, have benefited from educational programs they implemented.

“The educational programs for indigenous children in Sabah and Pahang began in 2021 and 2022, respectively. It is expected that by the end of September this year, we will be launching similar educational programs in Kedah,” she added.

Besides focusing on education, she said the RYTHM Foundation also emphasises the empowerment of youths, particularly teenage girls from underprivileged families by enhancing their skills in various fields to help improve their lives.

Academic Support

She said among the initiatives is the Maharani School Program (MSP) which aims to provide academic support and personal development for teenage girls to help build their self-confidence, leadership skills, and realise their potential.

The MSP, introduced in 2010, has impacted over 8,000 students. This holistic program is designed for teenagers aged 13 to 17, with a priority given to students from B40 families.

The programme is slowly evolving from what it was about 15 years ago. The Foundation goes to schools and run this programme to empower these girls through their leadership skills programme.

“Today, we also have a lab in Damansara Damai where we focus on IT skills, soft skills, leadership skills, among others, exposing them to career opportunities,” she said.

This is in line with their current plans where they focus on digital education, and they are continuing to evolve and renew their programmes in order to provide the best to these focus groups.

Another area that they are promoting currently is sports as they want to empower youths and develop the right spirit in them.

Jaguh RF

“We have started this programme called “Jaguh RF” for sports development as well as the Indigenous Development Programme (IDP) where a lot of focus and attention is being given there.

“We started this IDP programme in 2021 in Sabah and last year we had a very big convention to address the issues and challenges of the indigenous people of Malaysia. This has garnered a lot of attention and many people have come forward to say that they want to work with us.” – NMH

PETALING JAYA – I have always baulked at using the term Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as I feel it is more empowering to call them Persons with Unique Abilities, just as the participants at the Unveiling Uniqueness (UU) concert held here on 13 July had proven.

From the first act when the guests were mesmerised by a group of young men playing some exciting instruments that are not run of the mill and combined with generic musical instruments, we knew it was going to be an event to be remembered for many years to come. There was Samuel Ng on the traditional Chinese instrument Guzheng, Maxx Lim playing the Sarawak Sape, Ilyas Wong on the Chinese Drum, Wan Zareef thumping the Djembe, Shafic switching between the Australian Aboriginal instrument the Didgeridoo and the Malay Gendang, Jerry on the Indian Tabla, She Jun Yuen on the Keyboard while his brother Jun Wei was enjoying himself stroking the Violin.

Yes, the opening act spoke volumes about inclusion and bringing forth individuals with a passion for music with the ability to showcase their talents. According to Musicians For Musicians (MFM) vice president Edwin Nathaniel, 65, the concert represented more than just a performance opportunity.

“It’s a chance to challenge misconceptions and demonstrate the limitless potential of individuals with special needs,” he added. MFM, together with Nak Seni, Music Mart and BAC Education were the organisers of the concert, while Seadale Malaysia was the main sponsor.

Unveiling Uniqueness – All About Inclusion

“In total we received over 100 audition entries. From there, 36 musicians were selected to perform at the two-hour concert. Those who didn’t make it for the concert were given a chance to perform at the UU bazaar, which was held throughout the day.

“Our goal was inclusive participation, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to showcase their talents at the event,” added Nathaniel, co-founder of Aseana Percussion Unit (Apu), and known for his dedication to teaching music to children with disabilities.

Performances were not only by those with neurodiverse issues, but those with physical challenges. These are what made the whole evening stupendous.

“I was immediately blown over!” exclaimed one of the guests, former TV show host Anita Pandian, when asked about her comments on the concert.

“If no one told me that its a concert by those with different abilities, I would not have known at all because the talents showcased tonight were immense. These musicians with special needs truly presented their best with skills and passion, proving that talent knows no bounds,” said Anita.

She lauded the organisers for presenting such a wonderful concert, saying that such an event should be on a bigger stage, somewhere like Istana Budaya.

Echoing her thoughts was Nena Omar, a parent of one of the performers, Arezz “Rust”, who is with the band Raaze.

Nena had earlier posted in her Facebook: “I can’t describe nor quantify the amazing energy one feels to be in a room with greatness.

“One just has to be there to experience it.”

After the concert, Nena posted that each and everyone at the Omnia Auditorium, Menara BAC left the place very “well-fed”.

That is the kind of affirmation one needs to move ahead in life, whether it is from a parent or an outsider.

That was also the boost needed for another performer Aidel Rahman Morshidi (ARM), to go up on stage with his back up singing friends, Sarah, Nur, Lucas and Emily to present a fun rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” that had everyone swaying to the beat.

ARM is no other than the son of NMH‘s Editor-In-Chief, Hasnah Abdul Rahman, who was ever so grateful to the committee for placing their trust in Aidel.

“You see, four or five years ago, Aidel was performing in quite a number of shows – public concerts (there was one with a 1,000-member audience), school activities and in mall performances. He may have some problems with his voice control, but he has that cute, lilting way of presenting his notes that were endearing, especially to my ears,” Hasnah said with a grin.

Regression

“Unfortunately, after his dad passed away due to Covid complications, he almost became a recluse due to regression, and it was so difficult to get him back on track,” she sadly added.

Hasnah was therefore ecstatic when Aidel, who has Aspergers, was accepted during the auditions, but there was a lot of problems during rehearsals with getting him to focus and just belt out the tunes.

“But the committee members, especially Edwin, Cindy and Sonia, even the backing musicians, never gave up on him. They even suggested that he may want to change his song to one which he would be more comfortable with.

“With that kind of support and encouragement, it was no surprise to me that he not only sang his best, but introduced himself and his team mates at the beginning with so much confidence and even wanted to sing another song, but of course, there was no time for that,” Hasnah laughingly added.

Yes, if only there was more time. I think the audience would not have minded if they had to stay through till the morning because of the great performances which I must share here, even in brief.

Autistic Savant

Everyone was honoured and thrilled to be showered with the great piano thumping skills of autistic savant Clarence Kang who has performed in various international shows like AXN and for performers like Yuna.

Having seen Clarence that night, I was not surprised that he had won those accolades.

My favourite of course was that baritone voice of Lee King Tech who, despite his young age, just presented Engelbert Humperdinck’s El Mondo which such ease you would have thought he would have been trained by the great balladeer himself.

Of course, we would not be doing justice if this article does not mention the talented Joshua Johnson who obviously stood out with his singing prowess and he even sang an original song with his team mates from Jimi ‘Z. The song, Hello Malaysia, written by him, would be perfect for this Merdeka Day celebrations.

There were 21 performances by 36 performers, they were all great and I feel sad that I can’t mention them all in this article. But if there is a part 2 of Unveiling Uniqueness, I will gladly attend and cover it again. It was a night well spent when organisers unveil uniqueness unsurpassed. – NMH

There are mothers out there, and then there are mothers who do not share the same genealogy with you. These are people who expound love and caring to all – regardless of race, religion, social status and even any physical and emotional challenges. We call them inclusive moms, who propagate care and attention to those who are not even their offsprings, yet look for ways to better the lot of those who are marginalised and are different than their peers.

One such person is Anne Subashini who propagated inclusive education some 20 years ago and eventually made it a reality for those who who can benefit from it.

On this day, three years ago, my son Ahmad Ziqri, who is categorised as Classically Autistic, had to face a daunting situation with the police on his birthday. And Anne was there, right from the time the report was made the night before and the presence in the magistrate’s court. Not only that, Anne reached to the father of her two children, the late lawyer Gerard Lazarus, who extended his legal firm’s services to manage the situation. Gerard and his team of legal experts helped Ziqri right until the time we received the No Further Action notification last year and shortly thereafter, the Lord had other plans for Gerard and he left us in late November 2020. May his soul rest in peace, while his legacy lives on.

Anne began her activism work when she started the Children’s World Kindergarten in 2003 and she took in the differently-abled children like those under the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and a few other different needs. But what makes her programme interesting is that she integrates these special needs children with those who are typically-developing. Voila, she has created a society that has empathy and a caring attitude. Those who are typically-developing will be the role models for those who prefer to take their time in developing certain skills. And these typically-developing children will grow up to be caring young adults who will go all out to help and develop other marginalised individuals.

Two such persons that are a true testament of Anne’s advocacy are her daughters, Rishika and Shilpa. Both of them have always participated in most of the inclusion activities organised by Anne and her team of volunteers, so much so that Rishika decided to take up speech therapy studies while Shilpa did early childhood education and an executive diploma in autism. The two siblings took that brave decision so that they can come back and give back to the society that their mum has been advocating for. They were also inspired by Gerard who tried his best to be present at Anne’s activities and their grandparents, Marlene and Paul, who were also the rocks behind their mum’s activism works.

Bold And Innovative

“The inception of The Inclusive Outdoor Classroom (IOC) from our home was bold and definitely an innovative move by my mum, making the most of her available resources at that time. There were no available spaces for children of different abilities to socialise, learn and play in Subang Jaya then, so she decided to do it from the comfort of our home,” said Rishika Lazarus.

“My exposure to inclusion started from as young as six years old, and it definitely shaped me to be the person I am today – it even influenced my career path. I’m a speech therapist today because I believe that all individuals have the right to be treated equally and to be heard.”

Walking the talk, since 1990 Anne Sivanathan has been working with, advocating for and in partnership, with agencies – both government and non-profit – interested in promoting inclusive education in early childhood and primary school environments. Prior to her work experience, she received her formal training in the UK where she majored in Special Education.

She has presented at local and international conferences on topics concerning Inclusion. She consulted for British Council on the programme ‘sports for all’, lectures on the topic of disability in universities locally and internationally. If that’s not all, she is a co-leader in the inclusion working group – and is also a board member of the International Advisory Group, World Forum Foundation, USA.

In Malaysia, Anne serves as an Executive Committee member in the National Association of Early Childhood Care and Education Malaysia (NAECCEM) and is the Secretary-General of the National Autism society of Malaysia (NASOM). Closer to home, she is a community leader in Majlis Perwakilan Penduduk Zone 3, Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya (MBSJ).

Among her accolades was receiving a scholarship around her work advocating for Inclusive Education from the World Forum Foundation (USA), British Council (Malaysia), UK Trade Investment and the Selangor State Government. She was conferred the Wira Awani award by Astro in 2016 for her work around Inclusive Education and was nominated in the TOP THREE of the #STANDTOGETHER 2019 Kindest Awards (Teacher).

Anne’s work in Malaysia has been noticed by the international community whereby some of the members have come over to observe some of the IOC activities. Two such persons are Kirsten Haugen from Oregon, a collaborator, writer, mentor, presenter promoting a quality start for all children and support for the adults who care for them and Dr Loren Weybright, a retired professor and educational consultant from New York.

Kirsten observed that activities at IOC are carefully chosen to be adaptable and engaging for children of all abilities including those with unique or complex challenges.

“I have been following the evolution of the IOC, since its inception and finally got to visit in person in March 2019. The long-term involvement of many children and families speak volumes to the unique niche this programmes fills. At first glance, it looks like it’s all fun and games, and it is. But a closer look reveals some very thoughtful strategies behind the fun. Every child is welcomed and if willing, brought to the centre of the activities in meaningful ways to participate.

“Parents and volunteers are given training and support to enhance their abilities to work and play with each child so the children’s interests and perspectives are respected,” observed Kirsten.

She finds it rare to have a programme that successfully includes even a single child with unique or complex challenges. “But the IOC brings together people with a range of abilities and challenges and does it with joy and celebration. The day I joined in, so did children and teens with autism, deafness, cerebral palsy, down syndrome and more. But in IOC, those diagnoses don’t define them.”

Genuine And Real

She added that the IOC “family” looks at these individuals and sees them paint, draw, read, study history, collect rubber bands, love, travel and so much more. In the IOC, the smiles are genuine and inclusion is real, not contrived.

Loren echoes Kirsten’s observations and he has been present at some IOC activities, both in Malaysia and other parts of the world. At one session where he listened to a talk by an IOC alumni, Aidel Morshidi, who is a history buff, thanks to the IOC guiding him to build up his confidence, Dr Loren has this to say:

“I would like to say again how engaging Saturday’s event was for me and certainly, all others. I’ve always appreciated the environment you and your families have created for all the children and the rest of us too. IOC has become a place where we all learn about each other and ourselves.” Note: Aidel has grown to write articles on world politics which have been published in NMH here, here and here.

The IOC is also a place that acts as a support group for the parents. One such parent is Manjula Aryaduray. Together with her husband Miin Tze and triplets Nikhiil, Tisya and Tara, they drive all the way from Mont Kiara in KL to the IOC Clubhouse in USJ to join in the activities.

“It was late 2016 when I first met Anne. A friend whose child attended the IOC encouraged me to bring my children there too as it would be a good experience for my son who has cerebral palsy. From our first encounter, Anne welcomed my children with such warmth that they were happy to return on a regular basis.

“At IOC every activity is planned meticulously by Anne, who is always careful to ensure her team of volunteers are well-prepared on all the quirks and challenges that every single child at the IOC faces. She herself always pays close attention to the young participants and takes notice of what makes them tick. An advocate at heart, she spreads her passion onto volunteer team members and I’ve witnessed these young people grow and blossom into leadership roles under her guidance. She even encouraged and motivated my daughters to speak and educate others on their brother’s disability.”

Manju disclosed that her daughters have since fallen naturally into their roles as effective advocates for their brother. “My son himself has grown in confidence and interacts comfortably with all around him now. He formed strong bonds with some team members and has had amazing opportunities to meet and be heard by community leaders and members in Parliament. Knowing that his voice matters has been an empowering journey for him. Our family will always be grateful to Anne and the IOC.”

For Sheryll Chan, Brian’s IOC activities also started in 2016. She said that what Brian needed was a social platform and suitable language input.

“We diligently attended the activities, although it’s a lot of sacrifices to wake up early as we stay about 20km away. Brian at that time was turning 16. He speaks softly and often when needed. He speaks a lot more to Anne though and enjoys the football routines, drum circle which we all enjoy too and the art activities at the park.

“Us parents have warmed up to one another and the rapport is good. When the child is relaxed and looks forward to the activities, mothers know something good is happening,” said Sheryll.

In 2018, Anne proposed to the parents about a learning trip to New York. The Big Apple! How exciting, although they had much to prepare: the funds, visa and proper clothing, not to mention the hotel and homestay bookings. “And to partake this with Anne and some volunteers and parents! Oh, it was just too good a chance to miss!”

So for the team that went to NY, it was time to start lesson plans as they always do when they visit a country. “To me, bringing Brian to travel is opening doors for him to experience and explore. We finally got the itinerary and visa in order. The accommodation bookings brought our heads together, all wanting to be near the schools so as to save on transport. That was challenging being a first timer to the United States.”

Thematic Teaching

The team had to fundraise to buy gifts for the school administrators at the facilities they were going to visit. They worked hard on that and when the big day came, Sheryll and her two sons arrived in New York on the 08 November 2018.

“We explored Manhattan for four days before meeting up with Anne and the rest of the crew. A family from the Bahamas had stayed in the same hotel as us in Manhattan.”

Sheryll shared their Brooklyn story which began with them conjugating at the Maple Street school. It was a rainy morning, but it did not dampen their spirits.

“We started off visiting the Rivendel school. Brian had a good start. He read a book to his friends. He was at ease, and that set the stage. He enjoyed the visits and social meetings and was at ease with the people he met. Me, as a teacher looked more in-depth into their thematic teaching.

“Our group set out to Prospect Park, walked Brooklyn Bridge and had day trips to Brooklyn and Manhattan. We had train rides and meals together. We enjoyed every moment of it. And it snowed! And on the last day in Brooklyn, we had a cultural exchange.”

Everyone wore their traditional costumes and there were dances and songs together and an all-Malaysian meal planned prepared by our IOC parents. They sold soaps and other souvenirs made by IOC families.

“After a 12-day stay, we headed home, a bagful of memories that makes me smile to this day. I’d do it again!” said an enthused Sheryll.

For this writer, to sum up Anne’s achievements in one story is not an easy task to do. But an IOC mum, Zamidah Zainal says it so well: Anne is passionate, dedicated and very committed to her cause involving individuals with special needs. She will bend over backwards, push aside any shyness and bulldoze her way to get what she sees fit for IOC, be it financial or in kind.

The post Why I Think She Deserves An International Inclusivity Award first appeared on NMH.

Often, when parents are given a diagnosis of their child’s disabilities, the feeling is of despair or guilt. Some give up after a while. Therapy can be expensive, and perhaps regular schooling is not an option, writes Latisha Merican. This is the last of a 3-part series, the first of which is here and the second part is here.

However, developmental psychologist Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences states that we are intellectually different, with the ability to develop multiple intelligences, which then follows that methods of teaching should be varied. Unlike the traditional passive classroom approach where all children are expected to learn by sitting quietly, listening to the teacher up front and taking notes from the board, and then tested on the same subjects in the same way, there are actually eight components of intelligence: spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, linguistic, logical-Mathematical, interpersonal (social intelligence), intrapersonal and naturalistic.

A child who is not thriving in school may be inclined towards other forms of learning and interests and should be encouraged. Maths for example, a subject feared by many, is taught the same two-dimensional way. However, when I teach lower primary Maths, I incorporate visual and experiential learning and combine it with life skills. Fractions is taught by figuring out how to share twelve donuts equally among five persons, or by baking a simple recipe which would be halved or doubled. Instead of expensive manipulatives, skills are developed using baking tools and ingredients – measuring, pouring, whisking and washing up afterwards. The learning outcome of a topic on fractions is not confined to just numbers, but life skills, hand-eye-coordination, and perhaps most importantly, the discovery of a new interest or innate talent.

While Mirza was superb in Maths and the Sciences and did not require outside help, his lack of coordination and struggles in taekwon-do class induced me to engage Marcel Fabian, a special needs teacher certified in several martial arts disciplines as well as other sports. Marcel identified the disconnection between Mirza’s (and Shiraz’s) upper and lower bodies resulting in feeble turning kicks. He demonstrated step-by-step instructions on how to first rotate the shoulders, then the waist, so that maximum centrifugal force is generated. A year on, with Mirza’s determination and Sensei Marcel’s coaching, I was told by Mirza’s taekwon-do teacher Sir Faisal that Mirza’s reverse hooking kicks were awesome.

Since then Marcel became the designated physical activity teacher who has helped Mirza overcome physical and mental obstacles. From screaming in waist-deep water, under his calm tutelage Mirza has emerged a very confident swimmer. Marcel also teaches ninjutsu, whose components of flexibility and agility allow the child to learn how to roll and fall down safely. Sensei Marcel tailors his program to include parkour activities such as vaulting and balancing atop fences. 

Bushcraft

Mirza is currently doing two types of bushcraft; the first kind going solo into the jungle with Raman Bah Tuin, a Semai Orang Asli. He brings a parang and other essentials. Classes start with collecting firewood, shaving twigs and starting a fire, and then cooking food. Chicken is skewered onto sharpened bamboo stakes, rice is folded in bemban leaves which is then tucked in bamboo, along with sweet potatoes and corn, and water is added. Raman makes a cooking stand on which the stakes are placed while the bamboo is lodged upright close to the fire, boiling its contents. Along with the lesson of the day, Mirza also does his bit of community work by weaving bertam leaves and erecting shelters for traveling Orang Asli while Shiraz put his expertise in solar power to good use by making a portable light unit for the Orang Asli or Raman’s guests to use the toilet at night.

With Campmaster Vee, Mirza learns to be fully prepared before going into the jungle. He dons jungle boots, a hat, light-colored t-shirt and pants (bushcraft emphasizes lighter colors that allow contrast with blood red in case of bleeding), outer long-sleeved shirt, leech socks, a whistle, and is equipped with a knife. His backpack contains a water bladder, lunch, a notebook and pencil, a medical kit, ground sheet and mosquito repellent. He learns to walk safely in the jungle to the campsite where lessons are held. Currently he is learning about the plant kingdom. There was some excitement during one lesson when a wireless camera trap in the area picked up a sunbear meters away just minutes before.

While the goal of this class is jungle survival skills, Campmaster Vee, who has observed him, also imparts valuable life lessons, especially in managing his emotional self-control and insecurity issues. I was overjoyed to know that Mirza is making progress and is better socially. Although he is the youngest in class, as a senior, he has occasionally been given the task to teach the newer students, which helps improve his social skills as well as teaching methods.

Taekwon-do at Synergy Taekwon-do Club

Mirza enjoys taekwon-do at Synergy Taekwon-do Club with Sir Faisal Mustaffa, a fantastic teacher. Mirza is probably the only autistic child at the center, but Sir Faisal recognizes that he needs a little bit of extra help, and continues to encourage and support him. He has come far in his class, and is currently waiting to take his black belt 1^st Dan grading.

We explored mini tennis with Coach Ahmad Fairuz Ahmad Seth and discovered that after just a few lessons Mirza managed to play quite well and enjoyed it immensely. Coach Fairuz meanwhile, learned from Mirza about the magnus effect and ball trajectory.

Initially hesitant at first, Mirza enjoys modeling classes with ARP Elite Model. Teacher and former model Evelyn Nadal is very patient and has trained Mirza to walk calmly and sedately on the catwalk, resulting in a part in a fashion show, wearing designer outfits.

Because he is quite articulate, and has clear speech, I encouraged him to create videos for his YouTube channel. The aptly-named Mirza Michael’s Autistic Adventures has contents as diverse as his interests, from making fried rice to explaining fractals to his father who was just trying to have a peaceful lunch.

Mirza is homeschooled but academically learns on his own via Khan Academy and the various YouTube videos available.

Unfortunately, for the community at large, autism is still a stigma. Nowhere do I feel more at home than with the members of the Autism Café Project (ACP), an initiative started by Adli Yahya, whom I met two years ago. Through this, the children have taken part in bazaars selling Tareq’s awesome chicken rice. The chicken rice components and dinnerware are manipulatives used to help Mirza gain confidence, while taking orders improves their social and listening skills. Because in this ACP group every child has a different dis-ability and talent, everyone is accepted wholeheartedly and we progress together by supporting each other and finding opportunities.

Another form of support that I strongly encourage is to talk to a therapist. Shiraz started seeing a family and paediatric psychologist two years ago, as a supplement to parental guidance. Similar to positive parenting techniques, the psychologist starts by asking background questions and addressing the most urgent matters first. Later sessions include distress tolerance and emotions management, life skills are taught and transferred, with the ultimate goal being the individual’s ability to self-manage, with checkpoint sessions along the way.

Prior to discovering that his children have autism, when faced with a task or situation so simple or straightforward but yet defeated the children, Michael describes often feeling bewildered, losing patience and lashing out at the wrong things, and wondering if something is wrong with them. Now, he says that he KNOWS that something is wrong with them; however, the feeling is of a positive one. He is proud of the things they CAN do, he understands why they do what they do, and adapts the parenting and communication styles.

It is amazing that we subject our children to the same rat race regardless of their proclivities and abilities. School was a must to many, all children the same age were lumped into the same class, exams must be passed with flying colors and a child who can’t do an academic subject is deemed stupid. Shifting perspectives and priorities allowed me to discard traditional expectations. While I do find myself getting frustrated at someone’s inability to perform a task, we now focus our energies on finding out more about our personalities. We embrace, celebrate and enhance what innate skill and talent the children have, while providing support and encouragement and ways in helping them manage their dis-abilities.

I am thankful for my children, who are kind and thoughtful and who have taught me to be patient. Shiraz is now 19 and tutoring a child sitting for iGCSEs. He has made many friends, and not to my surprise, his friends are also similar to him, and polite and well-behaved.
