The Cameron Highlands and Rantau by elections could be the biggest battleground for Chinese dominated DAP and Pakatan Harapan parties.
The GE14 win euphoria is over with many voters who previously voted Pakatan Harapan upset that they are not seeing the changes they were promised. The by election could be the platform to deliver a message.
“We voted for change but it has been one disaster after another. They are focussing on the wrong things. ICERD while good was rushed through and it almost cost us another May 13!. Why were they in such a hurry and needed to upset the Malays. It should have been handled better!” said a Chinese voter.
Another voter lamented that if not for the former prime minister Najib Razak, the Pakatan Harapan government would be worse. Najib clarifies things, explains thing and and keeps them on their toes. Pakatan coalition when they were opposition did not do that.
The constant flip flops and “U turns” of the Pakatan Harapan government has been the butt of jokes however many are clearly annoyed over the lack of conscious effort on Pakatan’s side.
On UMNO and Barisan Nasional side, any win would be a welcome confidence boost to the party and the coalition which has been seen as lost. UMNO’s leadership change from Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi to Datuk Seri Utama Mohammad Hassan has been looked at positively for the moment.
Nominations for the Cameron Highlands start on Saturday the 12th January 2019.
